About
Sensuous Enemy is a woman-fronted darkwave electronic band led by JAI [vocals/piano/lyrics]
along with John Freriks [programmer/guitars] and Bob Hensley [programmer/synths/drummer].
Their music blends driving drum sequences, EBM synth lines, orchestral strings, piano, and vocal
harmonies with lyrics, melodies and powerful soaring vocals. Their music contains messages about
politics, religion, heartbreak, diversity, equality, love and so much more. During live performances,
the band adds electric rhythm guitars, synths, drums, and brilliant lighting to create a sublime and
compelling stage presence that delivers an immersive moving experience.
The band began in 2004, making 2024 their 25th year as a band. They released their first album
‘Deadly Sins’ in 2006 on Sonic Mainline Records, which won Best Electronic Album of the Year at
the 2007 Madison Area Music Awards.
In 2008 Sensuous Enemy completed their full length CD Fragments, which was recorded and
produced by Wade Alin of The Atomica Project/Christ Analogue in Chicago, IL. This album was also
chosen as one of the Top 10 CD's of 2008 by Madison’s Isthmus newspaper and the band won Best
Electronic Artist of the Year at the 2008 Madison Area Music Awards. They went on to win Best
Electronic Album of the Year and Best Electronic Song of the Year at the 2009 Madison Area Music
Awards.
All this only paved a stronger path for the band’s future. In 2010, Sensuous Enemy returned with a
new EP, Parity, on the label Radioactive Music. Parity contained three original songs—including
their club hit Intentions and their Goddess of death and rebirth metal inspired song Kali—along with
numerous hard dancefloor remixes.
In 2013, Sensuous Enemy shifted gears into a more sophisticated and silky sound embodied in the
digital release of their single track, Sirens of the Sea. This single was accompanied by killer remixes
from I:Scintilla, Endless Blue, Loss, I.X.XI and Killcrop. It was only a preview for what was to come
on their next full length album Voyager, released in November of 2013. Voyager was recorded,
mixed, and produced by Dan Clark of The Dark Clan with vocal recording and mastering by Eric
Oehler of Null Device at Submersible Studios and released on the infamous Nilaihah Records label.
Sensuous Enemy took some time off to pursue other interests from 2014 to 2019. The band
resumed writing again and completed and produced three new songs that were featured on their
2019 EP Rebirth. They were then signed to Distortion Productions for the release of the EP. This
digital EP was recorded and mixed by Jim Marcus of GoFight/Die Warzau in Chicago and mastered
by Eric Oehler of Null Device at Submersible Studios.
In 2024, the band released their next single Fire in the Dark, giving a sneak peak at their most recent
full length concept album The Awakening, containing 13 tracks of an introspective journey of the
mind, body and spirit. This album was recorded by John Freriks and mastered by Eric Oehler of Null
Device at Submersible Studios.
Sensuous Enemy has played many shows across the midwest and the east coast and have also
performed at numerous midwest music festivals such as Reverence/Irreverence, Madison Electronic
Music Festival, Sound n Fury I and II in Wisconsin, WTII Showcases in Chicago, Elektrofest in
Cleveland, OH and recently at the Vixens on Fire Festival in Wisconsin.
